Farming Gold

There's many gold farming tips out there. Most of them are fairly hidden, however. On these pages, I hope to give some pointers on the basics of gold farming, and general money-making in world of warcraft. And of course, I'd like to point out the irony of the inevitable "Buy your WoW Gold here" adverts above.

This page is a work in progress, but hopefully still valid...

General Theories

The first thing to bear in mind about gold farming is to back away from the game itself, the tips and tricks, and to really think about what's going on. The first thing to realise is that the World of Warcraft is effectively a very simple supply and demand system: Gold has sources, and it has sinks. It is not possible to make gold without realising that all the gold has to come from somewhere; people cannot buy your goods if they do not have the money themselves. If you manage to aquire all of the heavy leather on a server (in such a way that noone else can get it), and price it at 3 million gold each, no matter how much you try noone will buy because noone will have the money to pay for it. And similarly, any played based money-making scheme will fail if everyone else is also trying to make money in this same way.

I consider there to be effectively three strategies for getting gold; world sources, malicious play and fair trading. Each of those is on a page below; click on your desired chapter, although I'd recommend reading in order!
