Young Mountain

Written by Tim Finn and Micheal Froom.
I grew up not looking down,
The shadow of a mountain fell upon my town,
A blueness in the distance,
Living in my memory.
Now I climb the creaking stairs,
And walk upon a vanishing floor to get nowhere,
A little Mussolini screaming in my mind,

History will tell you lies,
History will tell you lies.
Your dream is buried by the dust of ages.

Time to sing a travel song,
For all the days that come and go,
As we move on,
Erotic summer heatwave buring in my memory,
Travel over hills and plains,
See the hidden valley's golden grass aflame,
A mother tongue that licks away your secret fear.

History will disappear,
History will disappear.
Your dream is buried by the dust of ages.

Quite a load to carry,
Everything that we have done,
Searching my horizon for a glimpse of the millennium.

Hasn't been so very long,
we haven't even half begun,
To peter out,
A version of the future,
Living in my mind,
I'm leaving it all behind,
It hasn't all been done,
History will tell you lies,
Your dream is buried by the dust of ages,
On the Young Mountain all four winds will blow,
From the Young Mountain wild rivers flow,
History will disappear,
On the Young Mountain a path unwinds,
On the Young Mountain who falls shall climb,
Climb the Young Mountain,
Cross the first river,
Swim the new sea.
On the Young Mountain all four winds will blow,
Leaving it all behind,
From the Young Mountain wild rivers flow,
History will tell you lies,
On the Young Mountain who falls shall climb,
On the Young Mountain all four winds will blow,
From the Young Mountain wild rivers flow,

How'm I Gonna Sleep

There's a pure idea in every mind,
Waiting to be acted on.
Yesterday we have to leave behind,
Climbing up that hill, never stop.
But I'd prefer that you were next to me,
Making the shape that used to be.

How'm I gonna sleep without you?
I don't want this lonely night.
How'm I gonna sleep, oh baby, I love you,
And I don't need this endless night.

There's an open road on every map,
Waiting to be travelled down.
All we need is faith to bridge the gap,
That lies between our hearts and our minds.
It's staring me blind,
I don't need this endless night, this lonely night.

How'm I gonna sleep without you?
I don't want this lonely night.
How'm I gonna sleep, oh baby, I love you,
And I don't need this endless night.

How'm I gonna sleep when I'm all alone?
How'm I gonna sleep, this house is not a home.
How'm I gonna sleep that dreamy ride through space?
This comet lacks a tail, gotta failure of nerves.

And I don't need this endless night, this lonely night,
And I don't want to be alone, I don't want to be alone.
How'm I gonna sleep?
How'm I gonna sleep?
I don't need this endless night.
How'm I gonna sleep without you?
I don't want this lonely night,
How'm I gonna sleep?
How'm I gonna sleep?

I don't need it,
I don't need this endless night.

Parihaka

My friend, My friend, I hate to see you suffer,
Events conspire to bring us to our knees,
My friend, my friend, you've taken this the wrong way,
Rise up, defend yourself, never give in,
Look to the sky, the spirit of Te Whiti,
The endless tide is murmuring his name.

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,
And even at the darkest hour,
His presence will remain.
I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

Te Whiti he used the language of the spirit,
Then stood accused, the madman and his dream,
He saw the train go roaring through the tunnel,
He heard the voice travel on the magic wire,
But he loved the silence of the river,
He watched the dog piss on the cannon's wheel.

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,
And even at the darkest hour,
His presence will remain.
I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

One day you'll know the truth,
They can't pull out the roots,
Come and take me home,
To weep for my lost brother.
They gather still, the clouds of Taranaki,
His children's children wearing the white plume,
So take me for the sins of these sad islands,
The wave still breaks on the rock of Rouhotu.
And when you taste the salt that's on your pudding,
And when you taste the sugar in your soup,
Think of Te Whiti, he'll never be defeated,
Even at the darkest hour,
His presence will remain,
I'll sing for you the song of Parihaka,
Come to Parihaka,
Weep for my lost brother,
The spirit of nonviolence,
Has come to fill the silence,
Come to Parihaka.

Tears Inside

You, sleeping on your bed of nails,
Weeping an ocean beyond the pale,
Strange, sorrow is your greatest skill,
You're suffering from overkill.

[chorus]
On you way you cannot hide,
From the howling wind and the roaring tide,
You might get hurt but your fear will subside,
When you at last escape from the tears inside.

Choose whether to laugh or to cry,
Menace and promise mingle in your eye,
Wait, it's only a matter of time,
You know everything will be fine.

[chorus]

Rain falls down and the seas run high,
When you're by my side we can rise above it,
Let me dry all the tears inside.

[chorus]

Birds Swim, Fish Fly

I turn one way and the wind blows me over,
I turn another way and it's holding me up,
Luck has nothing to do with it,
Things change when you learn to loosen your grip.
I think one way and the future is desparate,
I think another way everything is in sight,
Trees bend so branches don't have to break,
We mend the wounds of our last mistake.

Birds swim, fish do fly,
Proud man begins to cry.
Birds swim, fish do fly,
Things change, so why can't I?

I live one way holding onto the fencepost,
I live another way sliding off into space,
Each life is loosely assembled,
Inside the molecules tremble.

Birds swim, fish do fly,
Proud man begins to cry.
Birds swim, fish do fly,
Things change, so why can't I?
Little by little we die.

Washed up on the beach of betrayal,
How did the Mesonyx become a whale?
Birds swim, fish do fly,
Proud man begins to cry.
Birds swim, fish do fly,
Things change, so why can't I?
Things change,
Fish fly.

Little by little we try,
Little by little we die.

Why can't I?
Why can't I?

Suicide On Downing Street

It was no personal defeat,
That suicide on Downing Street,
They found him burning in his car,
He paid the price for what we are.

A stroke of luck, a trick of fate,
The life I build, the mess I make,
Too young to retire, too old to live,
This message all he had to give,

[Chorus]
Derek Bainbridge did not die in vain,
And I will sing his sad luck story,
Desparation is a warning flame,
Now we stand or fall with Derek Bainbridge.

He came 160 miles,
To wipe away all those smug smiles,
The empty hours dragging by,
His spirit withered up inside.

[Chorus]

He felt the man that he could be,
Was only wasted potential.
He went swimming in the deep forbidden sea,
Looking for that extra dimension,
In a selfish blue nation.

It was no personal defeat,
That suicide on Downing Street,
You cannot call us civilized,
As long as one life is denied.

[Chorus]

Swinging on a one-way pendulum,
Driving down a dead end highway,
Desparation is a warning flame,
Now we stand or fall,
Do we stand or fall.

Show a Little Mercy

It used to be
That life was cheap,
With bodies dropping all around,
But now I find
Good hearts are weak,
And love lies bleeding on the ground.

Why you wanna lose our love?
Am I gonna make it easy for you,
Disappear without a trace of crying?
All I ask is that you show a little mercy.

We're victims of
A lack of faith,
Don't leap into the great unknown,
Unless you know
You've got the goods,
Can stand it living on your own.

Why you wanna lose our love?
Am I gonna make it easy for you,
Disappear without a trace of crying?
All I ask is that you show a little mercy.

We share the guilt,
Of peapole in the name of love,
First build them up,
Then break them down,
Am I gonna make it easy for you,
Disappear without a trace of crying?
All I ask is that you show a little mercy.

Show a little mercy,
Show a little mercy,
Show a little mercy,
All I ask is that you show a little mercy.
